Electrical Discharge
WEDM uses a thin, electrically charged wire (typically made of brass or other conductive materials) as an electrode. This wire is continuously fed through the machine.
Material Removal
When the wire approaches the workpiece, electrical discharges (sparks) occur between the wire and the workpiece. These sparks create intense heat, which melts and vaporizes small portions of the material, thereby cutting through it.
No Contact
The wire does not actually touch the workpiece. The cutting process happens through the electrical discharges in a dielectric fluid (usually deionized water), which also serves to cool the area and flush away debris.
Precision Cutting
WEDM is known for its ability to produce very precise cuts, with tolerances as tight as ±0.0001 inches. It is ideal for creating intricate and delicate shapes in hard materials that would be difficult or impossible to machine using traditional methods.

WEDM can achieve fine surface finishes, typically ranging from 8 to 32 micro-inches Ra, depending on the settings, wire type, and the specific application.
WEDM is more suited for prototyping, tool and die making, and low to medium-volume production, especially for parts requiring high precision. While it can be used for mass production, the process may be slower compared to other machining methods.
Common wire materials used in WEDM include brass, copper, zinc-coated brass, and molybdenum. The choice of wire depends on the material being cut and the specific requirements of the job.
Yes, WEDM machines can be highly automated, including features like CNC control, automated wire threading, and robotic workpiece handling, making them suitable for complex and repeatable operations.
The time required for a WEDM job depends on factors such as the complexity of the cut, the thickness of the material, and the precision required. Simple cuts may take a few hours, while more complex or thicker parts may take several hours or even days.
